The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) was established on August 16, 1985 (Bhadra 1, 2042) under the Nepal Electricity Authority Act of 1984. It was formed through the merger of the Department of Electricity of the Ministry of Water Resources, Nepal Electricity Corporation, and related Development Boards.

NEA's main objective is to efficiently generate, transmit, and distribute an adequate supply of reliable and affordable power. They achieve this by meticulously planning, constructing, operating, and maintaining all generation, transmission, and distribution facilities within Nepal's power system, both interconnected and isolated.
